However, to prevent this intense interest from harming nature, a vital practice has been implemented in the region: The Mooring and Buoy System. As Bella Yachting, we consider it our duty to explain this system—which protects our blue home—and its positive effects on your holiday to our guests.

What is the Mooring and Buoy System?

It is an eco-friendly mooring system that eliminates the traditional method of dropping an anchor into the sea for boats to stay stationary in the bays.

• Buoy (Şamandıra): Floating pontoons on the water surface, securely fixed to the seabed with moorings, where boats can safely tie their ropes.

• Mooring Ring (Mapa): Sturdy steel carrying rings strategically placed on the rocks along the coastline. These prevent boats from tying their ropes to trees or boulders when mooring stern-to.

Thanks to this system, boats can comfortably stay in the bays without dropping anchors into the sea or damaging the trees on the shore.

Why Was This System Needed?

We owe the magnificent turquoise color, clarity, and rich marine life of Gocek bays to endemic underwater plants known as "Seagrass" (Posidonia oceanica). These meadows act as the lungs of the seas, balancing the oxygen levels in the water and providing a home to countless marine creatures.

However, boats constantly dropping and dragging anchors caused heavy chains to plow the seabed like a tractor, destroying this vital flora. At the same time, using tree trunks to tie up to the shore stripped the bark off the trees due to rope friction, causing them to dry out and die. Since the region holds a Special Environmental Protection Area (SEPA) status, implementing this project was a mandatory and excellent step to protect both the seabed and the coastline.
